Fantasy stories are usually filled with legendary heroes, grand quests, and characters with names so elaborate you need to sound them out three times before you just give up and finish pronouncing its Sir Athablehblehbleh.

Today on Ozzy's Book Club, we're diving into a series that celebrates all of those classic fantasy elements... while also having a lot of fun with them.

These episodes give readers a great introduction to the series' world, most importantly, its humor, and the unlikely hero at the center of the story.

MY THOUGHTS

One of the things that makes The Middle Age so charming is its hero. He's a knight who might not exactly be the sharpest sword in the armory.

Our unlikely protagonist seems to move through the world with a very simple goal in mind: obtaining the accursed sword. Unfortunately for him, things rarely go according to plan. Just when it looks like he might be getting ahead, the curse has a habit of quite literally bring him crashing back down.

And then there's the sword itself.

Far from being a silent legendary weapon, this particular blade has a personality of its own...and it's definitely not shy about expressing it. The sword's mouthy attitude and questionable intentions make for a hilarious contrast with the knight's naive determination.

Put the two together and you have the perfect recipe for a series of very unfortunate (and very funny) situations.

What makes the humor work so well for me, is how The Middle Age pokes fun at classic fantasy tropes. From exaggerated heroic moments to knights with names that feel impossibly complicated, the comic clearly understands the genre and plays with those expectations in clever ways.

A perfect example is the introduction of Sir -insert redacted black bar-, a wonderfully simple solution to the overly elaborate knight names we so often see in fantasy stories.

Even the jokes extend beyond the characters themselves. At one point, the series asks a surprisingly important question:

What do you call a group of dragons?

A quick search online reveals that there isn't really a universally agreed-upon-answer, which only makes the moment even funnier....at least it did tickle my funny bone.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT

- A clever blend of epic fantasy and sharp comedy

- Quick four-panel-ish strips with satisfying punchlines

- High-quality artwork that enhances every joke

- A lovable hero you can't help but root for

The Middle Age proves that fantasy adventures don't always have to be serious to be memorable.
