These early episodes introduce us to the central characters, hint at the deeper magic system of the world, and begin laying the groundwork for a mystery that clearly runs far deeper than it first appears.
MY THOUGHTS
One of the things that immediately stood out to me while reading Lavender & Lilacs is just how effortlessly the series draws you into its world.
That first question... it was hook, line, and sinker for me right from the start. Hang me on that mantle because you got me!
The series immediately introduced us to a character named Grey, a reaper carrying a soul staff that has clearly seen better days. His search for help brings him to Mira, who runs a charming little relic shop filled with magical staffs and mysterious artifacts. It's the kind of setting that instantly feels alive, as though every object on the shelves might have a story of its own.
From the moment these two characters meet, you can feel that the world surrounding them is much larger than what we see on the page.
One storytelling choice I absolutely loved is how the creator plays with points of view. A moment that initially unfolds through Grey's eyes is later revisited from Mira's perspective. It's a small shift, but it adds so much depth to the scene and shows just how carefully the story is being crafted.
And then there's the magic.
The series hints at a magic system that feels layered and full of history. Staffs, relics, natural magic, unseen realms... every small detail feels like a window into something bigger. Rather than explaining everything at once, the story lets these pieces emerge naturally, inviting readers to slowly uncover the rules of the world for themselves.
That sense of discovery is one of the comic's greatest strengths.
As new characters appear and mysterious forces begin to stir, the story quietly raises more questions than it answers. There are whispers of hidden powers, unfamiliar names, and larger forces at work... the kind of hints that make you pause and think, wait... what exactly is going on here?
And that's exactly the point.
Actually, several times, I found myself going back a couple of pages because I missed a crucial detail. It's the kind of series where you have to pay attention to the environment just as much as the speech.
Lavender & Lilacs embraces a "show rather than tell" style of storytelling. Instead of handing readers all the answers immediately, it trusts us to follow the clues and piece together the larger picture as the story unfolds.
It might feel a little complex at first, especially when reading several episodes quickly for something like the book club, but that complexity is part of what makes the experience so rewarding.
By the time you finish the first few episodes, you're left with a growing sense that there is something much bigger happening beneath the surface.
And that's the kind of storytelling that makes you want to keep turning the page!
