Here's another idea: what if Ecco was voice acted by someone like Billie Lou Watt? You may (or most likely won't) recognize her as the voice actor for the 60s version of Kimba the White Lion. I figure it would be a good homage to my source of inspiration too, though I'm also certain someone could think up a better VA to project a young, yet still noble voice for the lightningcolt.
